Evan Longoria hitting a walk off homer to beat the Yankees 8-7 in the bottom of the 12th inning. One of the greatest comeback games in baseball history. Down 7-0 in the bottom of the 8th, the Rays were losing their hopes of clinching the AL Wild Card or at least getting to the AL Wild Card playoffs to take on the Red Sox. The Yankees bullpen was all but great. With 3 walks in the 8th inning for the Yankees, the pitcher already sent 3 Rays home on walks with the bases loaded. Then, a determined Longoria steps up to the plate and on the very first pitch thrown, hits a three-run bomb out to left center field to make the game 7-6. Then in the bottom of the 9th inning with 2 outs, Rays manager Joe Madden decides to send out Dan Johnson to pinch hit for Sam Fuld. Dan Johnson is the last hope for the Rays to go into extra innings with the Yankees and Johnson is down in the count 2-2. Johnson not being the best pinch hitter in the world, had an average of .108. Madden chose Johnson as a last resort for the Rays to perhaps tie the game up. With a 2-2 count, the ball is thrown, and Johnson hits a homer to the right field, just barely missing the foul post to tie the game 7-7. A few innings later in the bottom of the 12th, Longoria is up to bat. This is the moment everyone had been waiting for. It was time for Longoria to be the hero the Rays needed him to be. After being down in the count 2-2, Longoria hit 2 fouls. Determined to win, Longoria did not give up. The pitch is thrown and Longoria swings and jacks the ball out for a walk off home run to give the Rays the win over the Yankees 8-7. That night in baseball will never be forgotten. It was and always will be the greatest comeback game in September baseball history.
